Miro Futurespective Template

We’re big fans of visual templates for running effective workshops. They give the workshop structure and signal to participants that you’ve put thought in as a facilitator.

Here’s a workshop template we extended from the Miroverse, with credit to Bigger Picture.

Context

A client of ours had emerged from a long project and were looking to refresh their ways of working. This workshop was the first step in bringing together a leadership team to align on their vision for how they want to work going forward.

How to Run the Workshop

1. Start off by painting the purpose of the workshop. It’s great to have a workshop sponsor open with the purpose.

2. Do a round table check-in introducing people’s functions/roles and one word describing how they are feeling about the workshop.

3. Write a Postcard from the Future. Get participants to imagine it is 1 or 2 years into the future. Write a postcard to their former self (the one sitting in the room right now) describing the improvements in the way they work. The postcards form the “Destination” with the Sailboat metaphor. Consider collecting the themes from this activity by means of an interactive discussion.

4. Reflect on the Tailwinds – things that would move us forward to our destination.

5. Reflect on the Anchors – things that would hold us down from getting to our destination.

6. Dot vote on the top Tailwinds to amplify and Anchors to mitigate.

7. Use the Strategy visuals from Bigger Picture to create a plan for the top Anchors.

8. Debrief around the actions collected along the way.
