Businesses can’t run without people, right? Modern Agile principles highlight the idea you need to ‘Make People Awesome’ and if we take that seriously, we have to look at the mental and physical health of our teams.
Why Self-Care Matters for Leaders
If you’re managing a team, your wellbeing impacts theirs. When you’re burned out, your team feels it. When you’re thriving, your team has space to thrive too.
Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s a prerequisite for being an effective leader.
Elements of Effective Self-Care
1. Mindfulness and Reflection
Taking time to notice what’s happening, internally and around you.
Practical approaches:
- Daily meditation (doesn’t have to be long—10-15 minutes helps)
- Journaling to process thoughts and feelings
- Regular reflection: “How am I doing? What do I need?”
- Mindful practices like yoga or tai chi
Why it matters: In constant reactivity mode, we lose perspective. Slowing down to notice helps us choose our responses rather than just react.
2. Connection with Nature
Time outside has measurable effects on mental health and stress reduction.
Practical approaches:
- Regular time outdoors (daily if possible)
- Walking or hiking
- Gardening
- Simply sitting outside
Why it matters: Nature reminds us we’re part of something larger. It reduces stress hormones and increases creative thinking.
3. Movement and Physical Activity
Your body and mind are connected. Moving your body improves mental health.
Practical approaches:
- Regular exercise (whatever form you enjoy)
- Walking (especially with others)
- Dancing, sports, or any movement
- Stretching and flexibility work
Why it matters: Exercise reduces anxiety and depression, improves sleep, and builds resilience.
4. Community and Contribution
We’re social beings. Connection and contribution are fundamental to wellbeing.
Practical approaches:
- Cultivating genuine friendships (at and outside work)
- Contributing to causes you care about
- Participating in community
- Mentoring others
- Supporting your team
Why it matters: Isolation is a risk factor for mental health challenges. Contributing to something larger than yourself builds meaning.
5. Sleep and Rest
Rest isn’t a luxury—it’s foundational.
Practical approaches:
- Establishing sleep routines
- Setting boundaries around work (not checking email at 11 PM)
- Taking vacation and actually resting
- Building in downtime during the week
Why it matters: Sleep deprivation affects everything—immunity, mood, decision-making, creativity. It’s not optional.
6. Doing Things You Enjoy
Joy and pleasure are essential.
Practical approaches:
- Hobbies and creative pursuits
- Time with people you love
- Experiences you find meaningful
- Play and laughter
Why it matters: Life isn’t just about productivity. Joy is a marker of wellbeing.
Self-Care and Team Care
When you model self-care, you give your team permission to take care of themselves too. You create a culture where wellbeing is valued.
Actions that matter:
- Taking lunch breaks (and not working through them)
- Leaving work at reasonable times
- Taking vacation
- Acknowledging mental health as domain as important as physical health
- Noticing when someone seems overwhelmed and checking in
Sustainable Performance
Think of wellbeing as fuel for sustainable high performance. Without it, you’re running on empty, and eventually, you crash.
The teams that perform best over the long term are led by people who take care of themselves and explicitly support their teams doing the same.
Getting Started
You don’t need to overhaul your whole life. Start with one thing:
- Add 10 minutes of movement today
- Go outside for 15 minutes
- Tell someone you care about what’s going on
- Get to bed 30 minutes earlier
Small practices, consistently applied, create powerful change.
Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s responsible. If you’re leading people, taking care of yourself is part of your responsibility to them.
